Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, FL-26
A Must Win in Florida
Florida 26 which includes the Florida Keys is great pick-up opportunity for Democrats. Hillary won this district by 16.3 points, but Republican Rep. Carlos Cubelo won re-election by 11.8 points against a strong candidate. Florida 26 will not be easy, but it must be won.
Debbie Mucarsel-Powell is an immigrant from Ecuador. She started working at age 15 in a donut shop to support her family. Mucarsel-Powell has strong credentials in education (as a former associate Dean at Florida International University) and the environment (with the Coral Restoration Foundation). Her campaign has the support of EMILYs List.
Republican Carlos Curbelo voted to repeal the Affordable Care Act. He has the full support of the Republican outside spending infrastructure. In 2016, Republican spent almost $7 million (outside spending) to defend this seat. Expect a repeat in 2018.
Debbie needs our support because Curbelo will not lack for resources. On June 21, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce spent $1.05 million to reserve air time for a pro-Curbelo media program that has not yet started.
In the August 28th primary, 2,000 more Republicans turned out to vote for Cuberlo than Democrats for Mucarsel-Powell. This will be a nail biter we must win!
