Elissa Slotkin is a third-generation Michigander whose grandfather founded Hygrade Foods -- the creator of the iconic Ballpark Frank. She is a former intelligence officer and national security expert who has worked for the CIA, the Director of National Intelligence, the Pentagon, and the State Department. Slotkin also worked in the White House under Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama. She is a former Acting Assistant Secretary for Defense.
Slotkin has been endorsed by former Vice President Joe Biden and the Michigan AFL-CIO. She is challenging two-term incumbent Republican Rep. Mike Bishop, a former state senator who has been a staunch opponent of the Affordable Care Act in Congress. Slotkin's mother, Judith, had no health insurance when she was diagnosed with stage four ovarian cancer in 2009; she died in 2011.
