2018 Result: Clyde loses by 4-point margin (50.9% to 46.7%)

The Ohio Secretary of State (SOS) race is one of the most strategic in the country. Not only can the SOS end the purge of Ohio voter roles, but when new US House lines are drawn in 2021, the SOS sits on the Ohio resdistricting commission with an equal vote to the Governor.

Kathleen Clyde has served in the Ohio House of Representatives since 2011 and is running for the open seat for Ohio Secretary of State (SOS). Clyde has served as a law clerk for the Ohio Secretary of State and the Ohio Senate, as an election official with the Franklin County Board of Elections, and as deputy legal counsel to the Speaker of the Ohio House. She received her undergraduate degree from Wesleyan University and her JD from Ohio State University.

Clyde has fought to restore the busiest days of early voting and extend early voting days and hours in Ohio. She has also introduced legislation for automatic voting registration to make it easier for Ohioans to join the voter rolls. Democrats must win the SOS race in 2018 to ensure a fair process in the next round of redistricting and to protect the voting rights of all Ohio residents. Republican-led redistricting in 2011 created one of the most gerrymandered states in the country, ending the careers of several Democratic incumbents and giving Republicans an 11-5 advantage in the state's congressional delegation.

Clyde's opponent, Republican Frank LaRose, supports a controversial decision to purge Ohio's voter rolls, disenfranchising tens of thousands of voters in the process.

In 2014, Democrats were outspent $4.5M to $1.4M and lost badly. Donald Trump owes a lot to the Republican SOS.

The Secretary of State in Ohio is decided by a statewide election. Incumbent Republican Jon Husted is term-limited.

Ohio's Secretary of State also serves on the state's redistricting commission and will play a significant role in determining district boundaries in 2021 and thus the composition of the US House through 2030.
