Maria Collett is running for an open State Senate seat in Pennsylvania against Stewart Greenleaf, Jr., a member of a conservative political family who supports right-wing agenda items such as cutting education funding and restricting women's rights. Stewart Greenleaf Sr. is not running for re-election after representing the district since 1979.

Collett began her professional career as an attorney working on behalf of children victimized by abuse and neglect; in 2009 she changed careers and became a nurse at two separate hospitals before shifting her focus to working as a Nurse Educator.

Collett received her undergraduate degree from the University of Maryland, her BSN from Drexel's School of Nursing, and her JD from Rutgers Law School.

Pennsylvania's State Senate District 12 lies in the collar counties of Philadelphia, incorporating parts of Bucks and Montgomery County. This is a suburban area that Hillary Clinton carried in 2016 that is become more diverse and is seen as a strong pickup opportunity for Democrats. Collett is seeking to become the first Democrat elected to the office serving constituents in parts of Bucks and Montgomery counties.
